Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 6/1/2018 10:19:03 PM May 2018 Fishing Report Spring is finally here and the fish have somewhat settled into a more normal pattern than they did during April. It appears that the cold fronts have finally receded back up north where they belong. Now all we have to deal with is a bit or rain and some light winds, if one could consider the thirty to forty mile per hour gales of the last few days. However this will soon pass and our lake will return to what it usually is during May. Expect all species but the catfish to have spawned and mo... Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 5/4/2018 11:50:06 AM April 2018 Fishing Report Hopefully all the readers of this post made it safely through the winds and rain in March. The weather really messed with the spawn of the bass and crappie but I believe other than the normal cool front that always comes around Easter that we are out of the cold days. This moderation in temperature will be good for the spawning bass and crappie, which somewhat delayed by the every other days fronts, will not proceed in earnest through the rest of April. There is one benefit to this protracte... Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 3/27/2018 5:39:19 PM March 2018 Fishing Report March by any name is an enigma. On the one hand it separates winter from spring, even though as the saying goes, " it"comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion." What I thinks this means is that we usually experience a few weeks of tantalizing warmth which we all hope means that spring is here. But we all know that those beautiful warm spring breezes can change in a few hours into a very cold grey day with biting north winds and intermittent rain and icy fog. What I like to think of the... Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 3/3/2018 8:51:48 PM Backlashes, Broken Rods and Vegans May Be The Cause Of Global Warming Folks I ordinarily shy away from controversial subject but an event last week forced my hand. A client mentioned that he was on the verge of starvation and suggested that we go to one of the restaurants on the lake for a salad. Since we were seven or more miles up the river and there was a hard wind blowing this did not sound like something that I chose to do. Instead I mentioned that I always had an on board supply of Beanie Winnie and some three years old cans of Vienna Sausage. The client ... Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 2/16/2018 11:22:46 AM Backlashes, Broken Rods And Electronics That Have gone Too Far There was a day in my earlier guiding career where the only electronic aid was a flasher. For those of you who are not old enough to remember, the device was simply a screen on which a spinning red light turned within a numbered circle. The red light would light up somewhere on the screen and at that point one could tell the depth by looking at the adjacent number. The device was a quantum leap from the string and weight that we had used in my earlier fishing forays. This simple depth finde... Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 2/2/2018 11:27:41 AM February 2018 Fishing Report Hello readers and welcome to another of my fishing prognostications. Hey, I have no idea what that word means either but I will try to be spot on in my suggestions for fishing the various species this month! Some have said that the only good thing about February is if the Ground Hog sees and/or doesn't see his shadow. It all depends upon whether your outdoors activities entail fishing or some snow related activity. We in the south pretty much can count out the latter but we most assuredly ca... Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 1/31/2018 12:46:42 PM January 2018 Fishing Report Happy New Year everyone. From the looks of things it is going to be a very cold beginning but that does not mean the fish will not bite. There are a few things to remember in January or any of the colder months for that matter. The most important is to dress properly. It matters not if the fish are fairly jumping into the boat or up on the bank. If you are not properly attired then you will not be able to take advantage of the bonanza before you. Layers are the secret. Sure one may pull on... Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 12/29/2017 12:24:24 AM December 2017 Fishing Report The last two months have been very unusual because the temperature for the most part rand well above average. This kept the surface temperature up and consequently the shad stayed in the backs of creeks and coves where the deep water fish could not reach them. My clients did have a number of trips where when we had a stiff north wind the sandies, hybrids and black bass chased them into the shallows. My guess is that the fish feel less threatened or possibly the light is distorted. At any rat... Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 12/1/2017 11:41:25 AM November 2017 Fishing Report Before I begin my spill please allow me to wish each and everyone of you a happy and safe Thanksgiving. We in America have so much to be thankful for but I pray for those less fortunate. The double whammy of the twin hurricanes, the wild fires on the west coast and the devastating earthquake in Mexico makes one understand just how fortunate we have been in this area. As you sit down to that big turkey dinner or perhaps in my case, a goose; think of those who have had to endure the brunt of mo... Johnny Procell, Fishing Guide 10/21/2017 10:23:47 AM
